Recognizing our Greatest Need
Have you ever faced a
situation where you realized you could not help yourself? No matter how hard
you tried, the problem was simply beyond your ability to solve.
That is a picture of
our spiritual condition apart from Jesus Christ.
In Ephesians 2:1–3,
Paul reminds us that before Christ, we were spiritually dead in our sins. He
does not describe us as simply needing improvement. We needed to be rescued.
No amount of good
behavior, religious activity, or personal effort can erase our sin or restore
our relationship with God.
Yet we sometimes
struggle to recognize how much we need His mercy. We compare ourselves with
others and convince ourselves that we are doing fine. We focus on our good
deeds while overlooking the sin in our hearts.
But God's standard is
not whether we are better than someone else. His standard is His own holiness.
Recognizing our need
for salvation should produce humility and gratitude. When we understand how
helpless we were apart from Christ, we begin to appreciate how wonderful God's
grace truly is.
The more clearly we
recognize our need for a Savior, the more deeply we appreciate the One who
saved us.
Scripture:

Application:
Jesus, thank You for rescuing me from sin. Help me recognize my need for Your mercy and never take my salvation for granted.
