Grace Is a Gift, Not a Reward

We live in a world where almost everything must be earned. We work for a paycheck, study for good grades, and put forth effort to achieve success. Sometimes we bring that same thinking into our relationship with God.

We may believe that attending church, reading our Bibles, praying, or doing good things will somehow make us more deserving of His love. But Ephesians 2:8–9 teaches us that salvation is not something we earn. It is God's gift of grace.

Grace means receiving something we do not deserve. Although we have sinned against God, He offers forgiveness through Jesus Christ.

Think about the prodigal son in Luke 15. After wasting his inheritance, the son returned home knowing he had nothing to offer his father. Yet his father ran to meet him, embraced him, and welcomed him home. The son did not earn that welcome. He received it because of his father's love.

God's grace is even greater. He did not simply overlook our sin. Jesus paid the price for our forgiveness through His death on the cross.

This truth should change our motivation for serving God. We should pray, worship, obey, and serve others—not to earn God's love, but because we are grateful for the love He has already shown us.

Scripture:
Ephesians 2:8 -
“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God”

Application:
  • Identify an area where you may be trying to earn God's approval.
  • Do something kind for someone simply out of gratitude for God's grace.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for the gift of salvation. Forgive me for trying to earn what You have freely given. Help me serve You with a grateful heart, remembering that my salvation rests entirely on what Jesus has done.
