The Reality of Valleys
Scripture makes
something very clear from beginning to end: valleys are a normal part of life.
From the Valley of Trouble in Joshua to the Valley of Weeping in the Psalms,
the Bible never presents hardship as unusual or avoidable.
Job 5:7 reminds us
that trouble is woven into the human experience. This can be difficult to
accept because we often expect the Christian life to get easier. We assume that
faithfulness should shield us from hardship, but that expectation isn’t rooted
in Scripture.
Understanding that
valleys are unavoidable reframes how we prepare for them. Instead of being
caught off guard, we can begin to anchor ourselves in God’s Word before we
enter the valley. The goal isn’t to avoid valleys, but to learn how to walk
through them with steady trust.
Valleys have a way of
reminding us that we are not in control. They strip away the illusion of
self-sufficiency and push us toward dependence on God. That dependence is not
weakness; it is the foundation of a strong and enduring faith.
Scripture:
Job 5:7 - For man is born for trouble, As sparks fly upward.
Application:
Lord, help me accept that valleys are a part of life and not a sign that You have abandoned me. Teach me to trust You even when I don’t understand what I’m facing. Prepare my heart to walk faithfully, no matter the terrain.
Job 5:7 - For man is born for trouble, As sparks fly upward.
- Reflect on a past or present valley in your life.
- Identify one way you can respond with faith.
Lord, help me accept that valleys are a part of life and not a sign that You have abandoned me. Teach me to trust You even when I don’t understand what I’m facing. Prepare my heart to walk faithfully, no matter the terrain.
