Learning to Rest in God's Presence
Most of us aren't naturally good at rest. We live in a
culture that treats busyness like a badge of honor, as if our worth is measured
by how much we get done. Even in our faith, it's easy to fall into the same
trap, running ourselves ragged doing things for God while barely spending any
time actually with Him.
But Scripture tells a different story. God has always
valued rest. In Psalm 23, David describes a Shepherd who "makes" His
sheep lie down and that detail matters, because sheep won't settle unless they
feel completely safe. Their rest depends entirely on how much they trust the
one leading them.
It's not so different for us. When we can't seem to slow
down, it's usually less about our schedules and more about our hearts. We're
still trying to hold everything together ourselves. God offers something
better: a stillness that comes from letting go, from trusting that He's got it.
Psalm 46:10 puts it simply, "cease striving."
Not just slowing your body down, but quieting the noise in your heart and head
long enough to actually be with Him.
Jesus lived this out. Even with people pulling at Him
from every direction, He kept pulling away to pray, to be alone with the
Father.
Scripture:
Psalm 23:2 - He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters.
Psalms 46:10 – Cease striving and
know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in
the earth.
Application:
· Set aside at least 5 uninterrupted minutes today to sit quietly before God.
· Reflect on one truth about who God is during that time.
Prayer:
Father, Teach me how to rest in Your presence. Quiet my thoughts, and remind me that You're the one in control. Thank You for being a Shepherd who cares for me and invites me into real peace.
