Choosing Presence over Productivity
One of the hardest tensions in the Christian life is
holding responsibility and relationship together. Luke 10 gives us two sisters
who handle Jesus' visit in completely different ways. Martha throws herself
into serving and preparing, working hard to do what feels right. Mary sits down
at Jesus' feet and just listens.
You can't really fault Martha, she's doing good things.
But Jesus gently pushes back, telling her she's distracted and anxious. Mary,
meanwhile, has chosen something better: simply being with Him.
There's a hard truth buried in this story. You can be
busy doing all the right things and still miss the point entirely. A lot of us
live more like Martha than we'd like to admit. We fill our days with tasks and
obligations, even ministry work, while quietly starving our relationship with
Jesus. We might look productive on the outside, but inside we're running on
empty.
Time spent with Jesus is never wasted, it's the
foundation everything else is built on. When being with Jesus actually becomes
the priority, the rest of life has a way of falling into place.
Scripture:
Luke 10:41–42 - But the Lord answered and said to her, 'Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.'
Application:
· Identify one thing you can pause or cut back on today.
· Use
that time for Scripture and prayer
· Focus
on listening more than speaking.
Prayer:
Lord, Help me choose what actually matters, time with You. Teach me to value Your presence over my productivity. Quiet my heart, and help me listen.
