Living in Present Trust

There's something easy to miss in David's words: he says "The Lord is my Shepherd," present tense. That small grammatical choice actually says a lot. God's care isn't just a memory from the past or a promise for later—it's active right now, in this moment.

A lot of us default to thinking about God in the rearview mirror ("He was with me back then") or somewhere off in the distance ("I'll really lean on Him once things calm down"). But Psalm 23 won't let us stay there. It calls us into something present and alive.

Right now God is leading you. Right now He's providing. Right now He's present in whatever you're walking through, whether it feels calm or chaotic.

Living this way takes a certain kind of awareness. It means noticing God's hand in the ordinary rhythm of your day and choosing, moment by moment, to lean on Him. Suddenly an unremarkable day becomes a chance to actually experience His presence.

And there's real comfort in that. You don't have to wait for a better season or a clearer path before you can know God's care. He meets you exactly where you are, today, just the way you are.

Anchoring yourself in the truth that the Lord is your Shepherd today frees you from the regrets of yesterday and the worries of tomorrow. You get to walk forward with the Shepherd who's already there.

Scripture:
Hebrews 13:8 -
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Application:
  • Pause three separate times throughout the day just to acknowledge God's presence.
  • Thank Him for something specific He's doing in your life right now.
  • Practice trusting Him in this moment instead of getting pulled into future worries.

Prayer:
Lord, thank You that You are my Shepherd right now, not just in memory or hope. Help me trust You in this moment, without getting dragged into the past or the future. Open my eyes to see You at work in my everyday life.
