Taking Courage in the Middle of Fear

Fear has a way of creeping in when life becomes overwhelming. Whether it’s fear of the unknown, fear of failure, or fear of what might happen next, it can paralyze us. Yet throughout Scripture, God repeatedly commands His people to be courageous. This is not a suggestion—it is a call to action. Courage is not the absence of fear; it is the decision to move forward in faith despite it.
 
In Joshua 1:9, God commands Joshua to be strong and courageous as he steps into a daunting leadership role. The reason for this courage is not found in Joshua’s ability, but in God’s presence. The same truth applies to us. We often feel inadequate or overwhelmed, but God never asks us to rely on our own strength. Instead, He promises to be with us wherever we go.
 
As believers, we struggle with courage because we tend to focus on what could go wrong rather than who is with us. We magnify our problems and minimize God’s power. But courage grows when we shift our focus back to Him. Remembering that God is present changes how we respond to fear.
 
Courage is essential because it keeps us from shrinking back and allows us to fulfill the calling God has placed on our lives. When we choose courage, we are choosing to trust that God is bigger than whatever we face.
 
Scripture:
Joshua 1:9 - Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.
 
Application:

• Identify a fear that is holding you back.

• Take one step of faith today in spite of that fear.

• Remind yourself of God’s presence throughout the day.

 
Prayer:
Lord, You know the fears that weigh on my heart. Help me to take courage, not because I feel strong, but because You are with me. Give me boldness to move forward in faith today.
